Script Location
You can set the extension to use Azure Blob storage credentials to access Azure Blob storage. The script location can be anywhere, as long as the virtual machine can be routed to that endpoint (for example, GitHub or an internal file server).
Internet Connectivity
If you need to download a script externally (for example, from GitHub or Azure Storage), you must open an additional network security group (NSG) or firewall ports. For instance, if the script is in Azure Storage, you can allow access using Azure NSG Service Tags for Storage .
Ensure that the certificate is installed correctly in the Trusted Root Certification Authorities store on the virtual machine. The custom script extension has no way to bypass certificate validation. So if you’re downloading from a protected location with, for example, a self-signed certificate, you might get errors like “The remote certificate is invalid according to the validation procedure.”
If the script is on a local server, you may need to open additional NSG or firewall ports.
Tips and Tricks
- Check that the script runs without errors. The highest error rate for this extension is due to syntax errors in the writing. Put an extra log in the hand to make it easier to find mistakes.
- Write idempotent scripts, so accidentally running them more than once won’t cause changes to the system.
- Make sure that the scripts do not require user input when they run.
- The script can run for 90 minutes. A value greater than this will cause an extension provisioning failure.
- Don’t put reboots inside the script. This action will cause problems with other extensions being installed, and the extension will not continue after the reboot.
- If you have a script that causes a reboot, before installing applications and running hands, schedule the reboot with a Windows scheduled task or with tools such as the DSC, Chef, or Puppet extensions.
- Do not run a script that causes the virtual machine agent to stop or update. It can leave the extension in a transition state and cause timeouts.
- You’ll only see an extension status “in transition” from the Azure portal or CLI when the script is running. If you want to receive more frequent status updates from a running script, you must create your solution.
- The custom script extension does not natively support proxy servers. Still, you can use a file transfer tool that helps proxy servers within the script, such as Invoke-Web Request.
- Be aware of non-default directory locations that scripts or commands may be based on. Apply logic to control them.
